From early childhood, I had a passionate love of edged weapons. I loved the old epic tales of warriors whose blades were extensions of themselves, not only in physical but in spiritual terms. An edged weapon can be a work of art to rival any other. To me, the double-edged weapon represents the perfect form aesthetically in its symmetry. Regrettably, double-edged daggers tend to be less practical in terms of performing household chores like cutting meat or string. One doesn't have as much need to stab or thrust, except perhaps when opening boxes. For ritual or dramatic use, however, the double-edged dagger has no equal.
From the very dawn of history, the man who could work metal was considered a magician of sorts. Hephaestus (or Vulcan) and Weyland (or Volund) are but two of the famous smiths in ancient myths. Swordmaking is art, science and hard physical labour. It is only in the past couple of decades that contemporary swordmakers have been able to rediscover the secrets of the ancients, in terms of creating Damascus steel, wootz and pattern-welded steel. Some individuals publish photographs of themselves. I would like to share photographs of the blades I love. I hope ultimately to add links to sites that deal with the art of forging blades as well as others that provide photographs of swords and daggers from every culture and civilisation.
I currently write game guides that are published on IGN. I have written one Harvest Moon guide for BradyGames. I read the following: mythology, philosophy, history, historical novels, fantasy/science fiction, murder mysteries (no political thrillers, please!) and some political analysis. I am working on a book that deals with comparative mythology and symbolism and covers NEW ground (or rather recovers lost ground) if possible.
These are rather poor photographs of an Italian cavalry sword from the era of the First World War, the last war where gentlemen enlisted, believing they could fight as gentlemen... and were confronted then by a mechanised army.
